How Many Hours Should Class 11 and 12 Students Study for NEET and IIT JEE Physics?

Many students hear stories like, “I studied only two hours a day and got selected,” or “I never made notes, I just listened once and remembered everything.” These stories sound attractive, but for most students they are dangerous. They create a false dream that success in NEET or IIT JEE can come with very little effort.

The truth is simple: if someone says he studied only two or three hours daily and cleared IIT JEE or NEET with a great rank, either he is hiding the real effort, or he is an exceptional genius — one in lakhs. Normal students should not build their strategy on rare examples.

In Class 11 and Class 12, the syllabus is huge. • making short notes,

• and attempting tests honestly.

For Physics, the best method is not memorisation. The best method is concept → formula → application → numerical → revision.

For example, in mechanics, a student must understand Free Body Diagram properly. Weight acts downward. Tension acts along the string. Normal reaction acts perpendicular to the surface. Similarly, in current electricity, students should not only remember formulas. Many students in Mumbai get distracted by the fast lifestyle, glamour, malls, social media, reels, outings and peer pressure. For Class 12 students, the target should be balance. They must manage board syllabus, competitive exam preparation and revision of Class 11 chapters. Many students ignore Class 11 and later suffer badly because mechanics and basic electricity are connected to many higher chapters.

The biggest mistake students make is passive learning. Watching lectures is not enough. Reading solutions is not enough. You must solve questions with your own hand. Physics enters the brain through thinking and enters confidence through practice.

If a student says, “Sir, I understood everything in class but I cannot solve questions,” it means the concept is not yet active. Understanding is the first step. Application is the real test.
