Proton, Neutron, Deuteron and Alpha Particle: Copy-Paste Table

ParticleSymbolChargeMass ApproximationImportant Point
Proton¹H¹ or p+emPositively charged particle
Neutron⁰n¹ or n0mNeutral particle, no charge
Deuteron¹H² or d+e2mNucleus of deuterium
Alpha Particle²He⁴ or α+2e4mHelium nucleus

Very Important Correction for Students

Many students get confused between neutron and deuteron.

Correct concept:

Proton: charge = +e, mass = m
Neutron: charge = 0, mass = m
Deuteron: charge = +e, mass = 2m
Alpha particle: charge = +2e, mass = 4m

So remember:

Neutron is neutral.
Deuteron has charge +e.
Alpha particle has charge +2e.

Why These Particles Are Important in Class 12 Physics

In Class 12 Physics, these particles are used in many chapters:

  • Electrostatics

  • Electric field and potential

  • Motion of charged particles

  • Magnetic field

  • Cyclotron

  • Nuclear physics

  • Radioactivity

  • Modern physics

  • Rutherford scattering

  • Mass defect and binding energy

If a question says proton, then use:

q = +e
m = m

If a question says deuteron, then use:

q = +e
m = 2m

If a question says alpha particle, then use:

q = +2e
m = 4m

If a question says neutron, then use:

q = 0
m = m

Kumar Sir Style Explanation

देखो बेटा, Physics में particle का नाम देखते ही सबसे पहले दो चीजें लिखो:

Charge कितना है?
Mass कितना है?

अगर charge पता है और mass पता है, तो half question वहीं solve हो जाता है.

For example, if a proton and alpha particle are moving in the same electric field, then acceleration is:

a = qE/m

For proton:

ap = eE/m

For alpha particle:

aα = 2eE/4m

aα = eE/2m

So:

aα = ap/2

मतलब alpha particle की acceleration proton की half होगी.

यही concept NEET और JEE में बार-बार आता है.

Important Formula Applications

1. Force in Electric Field

F = qE

For proton:

F = eE

For alpha particle:

F = 2eE

For neutron:

F = 0

Because neutron has no charge.

2. Acceleration in Electric Field

a = qE/m

For proton:

a = eE/m

For deuteron:

a = eE/2m

For alpha particle:

a = 2eE/4m = eE/2m

So deuteron and alpha particle have same acceleration in the same electric field.

3. Motion in Magnetic Field

Radius of circular path:

r = mv/qB

For proton:

r = mv/eB

For alpha particle:

r = 4mv/2eB

r = 2mv/eB

So if speed is same, alpha particle radius is double of proton radius.

4. Cyclotron Frequency

f = qB/2πm

For proton:

fp = eB/2πm

For alpha particle:

fα = 2eB/2π(4m)

fα = eB/4πm

So:

fα = fp/2

Why Students in Khalifa City Need Kumar Sir

Many students understand theory in school, but they get stuck in numerical questions. The reason is simple: they do not know how to convert the question language into Physics language.

Kumar Sir teaches students how to read the question properly. He tells them what to write first, which formula to use, how to apply sign convention, and how to avoid silly mistakes.

For example, if a question says alpha particle, many students only remember that it is helium nucleus. But in numerical questions, you must immediately write:

q = +2e
m = 4m

If a question says deuteron:

q = +e
m = 2m

If a question says neutron:

q = 0
m = m

This small clarity saves marks in exams.

ParticleSymbolChargeMassNatureImportant Properties
Protonp or ¹H¹+emPositively charged particlePresent inside nucleus, deflects in electric and magnetic field, acceleration in electric field = eE/m
Neutronn or ⁰n¹0mNeutral particlePresent inside nucleus, no deflection in electric field, no electric force, important in nuclear reactions
Deuterond or ¹H²+e2mNucleus of deuteriumContains 1 proton + 1 neutron, charge same as proton, mass double of proton
Alpha Particleα or ²He⁴+2e4mHelium nucleusContains 2 protons + 2 neutrons, heavy and positively charged, less penetrating power, strong ionising power
Beta Particleβ⁻ or e⁻-every small, about m/1836Fast electronEmitted in beta decay, high speed, deflects strongly in electric and magnetic field

Kumar Sir Style Short Memory Trick

Proton: charge +e, mass m
Neutron: charge 0, mass m
Deuteron: charge +e, mass 2m
Alpha particle: charge +2e, mass 4m
Beta particle: charge -e, mass almost zero compared to proton

Very Important for Numericals

In electric field:

F = qE

So:

Proton: F = eE
Neutron: F = 0
Deuteron: F = eE
Alpha particle: F = 2eE
Beta particle: F = eE, but direction is opposite to electric field because charge is negative.

In magnetic field:

r = mv/qB

So radius depends on:

mass / charge

Alpha particle has large mass, so radius is usually larger.
Beta particle has very small mass, so it bends very strongly.

20 Conceptual Questions on Proton, Deuteron and Alpha Particle

Kumar Sir Style

1. What is the charge on a proton?

Answer:
Proton has charge:

q = +e

It is positively charged.

2. What is the mass of a proton in numerical questions?

Answer:
In most Physics numericals, proton mass is taken as:

m = m

It is the reference mass.

3. What is a deuteron?

Answer:
Deuteron is the nucleus of deuterium.

It contains:

1 proton + 1 neutron

So its charge is:

q = +e

and mass is approximately:

m = 2m

4. What is an alpha particle?

Answer:
Alpha particle is the nucleus of helium.

It contains:

2 protons + 2 neutrons

So:

q = +2e

mass = 4m

5. Which particle has maximum charge: proton, deuteron or alpha particle?

Answer:
Alpha particle has maximum charge because:

Proton = +e
Deuteron = +e
Alpha particle = +2e

6. Which particle has maximum mass?

Answer:
Alpha particle has maximum mass.

Proton = m
Deuteron = 2m
Alpha particle = 4m

7. In the same electric field, which particle experiences maximum force?

Answer:
Force is:

F = qE

Alpha particle has charge +2e, so it experiences maximum force.

8. In the same electric field, compare acceleration of proton and deuteron.

Answer:
Acceleration:

a = qE/m

For proton:

ap = eE/m

For deuteron:

ad = eE/2m

So:

ad = ap/2

9. In the same electric field, compare acceleration of proton and alpha particle.

Answer:
For proton:

ap = eE/m

For alpha particle:

aα = 2eE/4m

aα = eE/2m

So:

aα = ap/2

10. In the same electric field, compare acceleration of deuteron and alpha particle.

Answer:
For deuteron:

ad = eE/2m

For alpha particle:

aα = 2eE/4m = eE/2m

So both have same acceleration.

11. Why do deuteron and alpha particle have same acceleration in the same electric field?

Answer:
Because their q/m ratio is same.

For deuteron:

q/m = e/2m

For alpha particle:

q/m = 2e/4m = e/2m

So acceleration is same.

12. In the same magnetic field with same velocity, which has maximum radius?

Answer:
Radius:

r = mv/qB

For proton:

rp = mv/eB

For deuteron:

rd = 2mv/eB

For alpha particle:

rα = 4mv/2eB = 2mv/eB

So deuteron and alpha particle have same radius, and both are double of proton.

13. In the same magnetic field with same velocity, compare radius of proton and alpha particle.

Answer:

rp = mv/eB

rα = 4mv/2eB

rα = 2mv/eB

So:

rα = 2rp

14. In a cyclotron, which particle has highest frequency?

Answer:
Cyclotron frequency:

f = qB/2πm

Frequency depends on q/m.

Proton has highest q/m among proton, deuteron and alpha particle.

So proton has highest frequency.

15. Compare cyclotron frequency of proton and deuteron.

Answer:

fp = eB/2πm

fd = eB/2π(2m)

fd = fp/2

So deuteron frequency is half of proton frequency.

16. Compare cyclotron frequency of proton and alpha particle.

Answer:

fp = eB/2πm

fα = 2eB/2π(4m)

fα = fp/2

So alpha particle frequency is half of proton frequency.

17. Why does alpha particle bend less than proton in magnetic field?

Answer:
Alpha particle has larger mass. Its mass is 4m and charge is only 2e.

So its m/q ratio is larger, therefore radius is larger and bending is less.

18. If proton and alpha particle are accelerated through same potential difference, which gets more kinetic energy?

Answer:
Kinetic energy gained:

K = qV

Proton:

Kp = eV

Alpha particle:

Kα = 2eV

So alpha particle gets double kinetic energy.

19. If proton and deuteron are accelerated through same potential difference, which gets more kinetic energy?

Answer:
Both have same charge +e.

So both gain same kinetic energy:

K = eV

20. What is the most important memory table for these particles?

Answer:

Proton: q = +e, mass = m
Deuteron: q = +e, mass = 2m
Alpha particle: q = +2e, mass = 4m
