1. Introduction to Magnetic Flux

Magnetic flux is the measure of magnetic field passing through a surface. It depends on magnetic field strength, area of the surface and orientation of the surface. The area vector is perpendicular to the surface, so the angle θ is always measured between magnetic field B and area vector A.

Dot product formΦ = B · A
Scalar formΦ = BA cosθ
Maximum fluxθ = 0°, Φ = BA
Zero fluxθ = 90°, Φ = 0
Magnetic flux through a surface: Φ = BA cosθ
Area vector A θ Magnetic field B Flux measures how much magnetic field passes through a surface.

2. Unit and Dimension of Magnetic Flux

From Φ = BA, magnetic flux unit is tesla metre squared. This unit is called weber.

Unit1 Wb = 1 T m²
TeslaT = N A⁻¹ m⁻¹
Weber dimension[Φ] = [B][A] = M L² T⁻² A⁻¹

3. Flux Through Surface

Flux is maximum when magnetic field is parallel to area vector. Flux is zero when magnetic field is perpendicular to area vector, which means the field lies in the plane of the surface.

Flux through surface for different orientations
θ = 0° maximum flux Φ = BA θ = 90° zero flux Φ = 0 general θ partial flux Φ = BA cosθ

4. Ways to Change Flux

Induced EMF occurs only when magnetic flux changes. Since Φ = BA cosθ, flux can change by changing B, changing A, or changing orientation θ.

Three ways to change magnetic flux
Change Bstronger or weaker fieldChange Aexpand or contract loopChange θrotate the loop Φ = BA cosθ changes if B, A or θ changes.

5. Flux Linkage

If a coil has N turns and flux through each turn is Φ, the total flux linkage is NΦ. More turns means larger induced EMF for the same flux change.

Flux linkage
Induced EMFe = −d(NΦ)/dt
For constant Ne = −N dΦ/dt

6. Faraday's First Law

Whenever magnetic flux linked with a circuit changes, an EMF is induced in the circuit. If the circuit is closed, induced current flows. If the circuit is open, induced EMF can exist but current does not flow.

Faraday's first law: moving magnet induces current
NS magnet approaching G induced current Moving magnet: deflection. Stationary magnet: no deflection. Moving away: opposite deflection.

7. Faraday's Second Law

The magnitude of induced EMF is equal to the rate of change of flux linkage. The negative sign represents Lenz's law.

Faraday's lawe = − d(NΦ)/dt
Constant turnse = −N dΦ/dt
Average EMFe_avg = NΔΦ/Δt

Step 1

Find initial flux Φ₁ = BA cosθ.

Step 2

Find final flux Φ₂ after the change.

Step 3

Use ΔΦ = Φ₂ − Φ₁ and multiply by N.

Step 4

Divide by time interval to get average induced EMF.

8. Lenz's Law and Conservation of Energy

Lenz's law states that the induced current flows in such a direction that it opposes the change in magnetic flux which produced it. This is why EMI follows conservation of energy and does not create free energy.

Lenz's law and conservation of energy
N N approachescoil face becomes Nrepulsion prevents free energy N N moves awaycoil face becomes Sattraction prevents free energy

9. Conservation of Energy in EMI

When a magnet approaches a coil, the induced current creates a magnetic field opposing the approach. External mechanical work is required. This work becomes electrical energy and heat in the circuit. In motional EMF problems, mechanical power supplied is converted into electrical power.

Mechanical to electricalP_mech = P_elec
Power in resistorP = I²R = e²/R
Induced chargeq = NΔΦ/R

Q1Coil removed from magnetic field

Question: A magnetic field of flux density 1.0 Wb m⁻² acts normal to a 80 turn coil of 0.01 m² area. Find the e.m.f. induced in it, if this coil is removed from the field in 0.1 second.

Given Data: B = 1.0 T, N = 80, A = 0.01 m², Δt = 0.1 s.

Formula Usede = NΔΦ/Δt = NBA/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

Initially, flux linkage = NBA because the field is normal to the coil.

When removed from the field, final flux is zero.

e = 80 × 1.0 × 0.01 / 0.1 = 8 V.

Final Answer: 8 V.
Q2Magnetic field changes uniformly

Question: Find the magnitude of e.m.f. induced in a 200 turns coil with cross sectional area 0.16 m², if the magnetic field through the coil changes from 0.10 Wb m⁻² to 0.30 Wb m⁻² at a uniform rate over a period of 0.05 s.

Given Data: N = 200, A = 0.16 m², ΔB = 0.20 T, Δt = 0.05 s.

Formula Usede = NAΔB/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

e = 200 × 0.16 × 0.20 / 0.05.

e = 6.4 / 0.05 = 128 V.

Final Answer: 128 V.
Q3Field perpendicular to coil plane

Question: Find the e.m.f. induced in a coil of 200 turns and cross sectional area 0.2 m², when a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the coil changes from 0.1 Wb m⁻² to 0.5 Wb m⁻² at a uniform rate over a period of 0.05 s.

Given Data: N = 200, A = 0.2 m², ΔB = 0.4 T, Δt = 0.05 s.

Formula Usede = NAΔB/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

Since B is perpendicular to the plane, the area vector is parallel to B, so cosθ = 1.

e = 200 × 0.2 × 0.4 / 0.05 = 320 V.

Final Answer: 320 V.
Q4Square coil rotated through 180 degrees

Question: A square copper coil of each side 8 cm consists of 100 turns. The coil is initially in vertical plane, such that the plane of the coil is normal to uniform magnetic field of induction 0.4 Wb m⁻². The coil is turned through 180° about a horizontal axis in 0.2 s. Find the induced e.m.f.

Given Data: N = 100, side = 8 cm = 0.08 m, A = 0.0064 m², B = 0.4 T, Δt = 0.2 s.

Formula Usede = N(2BA)/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

Initial flux per turn = +BA. After rotation through 180°, flux per turn = −BA.

Change in flux per turn = 2BA.

e = 100 × 2 × 0.4 × 0.0064 / 0.2 = 2.56 V.

Final Answer: 2.56 V.
Q5Rotating metal disc

Question: A metal disc of radius 200 cm is rotated at a constant angular speed of 60 rad s⁻¹ in a plane at right angles to an external field of magnetic induction 0.05 Wb m⁻². Find the e.m.f. induced between the centre and a point on the rim.

Given Data: R = 200 cm = 2 m, ω = 60 rad s⁻¹, B = 0.05 T.

Formula Usede = (1/2)BωR²
Step-by-Step Solution:

The motional EMF between centre and rim of a rotating disc is e = 1/2 BωR².

e = 1/2 × 0.05 × 60 × 2² = 6 V.

Final Answer: 6 V.
Q6Time required to reduce field to zero

Question: A uniform magnetic flux density of 0.1 Wb m⁻² extends over a plane circuit of area 2 m² and is normal to it. How quickly must the field be reduced to zero, if an e.m.f. of 100 volt is to be induced in the circuit ?

Given Data: B = 0.1 T, A = 2 m², e = 100 V.

Formula Usede = AΔB/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

ΔΦ = AΔB = 2 × 0.1 = 0.2 Wb.

Δt = ΔΦ/e = 0.2/100 = 0.002 s.

Final Answer: 2 millisecond.
Q7Circular loop changed into square

Question: A wire 88 cm long bent into a circular loop is placed perpendicular to the magnetic field of flux density 2.5 Wb m⁻². Within 0.5 sec, the loop is changed into a square of each side 22 cm and flux density is increased to 3.0 Wb m⁻². Calculate the value of e.m.f. induced.

Given Data: Wire length = 0.88 m, initial B = 2.5 T, final square side = 0.22 m, final B = 3.0 T, Δt = 0.5 s.

Formula Usede = |ΔΦ|/Δt, Φ = BA
Step-by-Step Solution:

Initial circle radius r = L/(2π) = 0.88/(2π) = 0.14 m.

Initial area = πr² = 0.0616 m².

Initial flux = 2.5 × 0.0616 = 0.154 Wb.

Final square area = (0.22)² = 0.0484 m².

Final flux = 3.0 × 0.0484 = 0.1452 Wb.

|ΔΦ| = |0.1452 − 0.154| = 0.0088 Wb.

e = 0.0088/0.5 = 0.0176 V ≈ 0.018 V.

Final Answer: 0.018 V.
Q8Coil turned through 180 degrees

Question: A coil of mean area of 500 cm² and having 1000 turns is held perpendicular to a uniform field of 0.4 G. The coil is turned through 180° in 1/10 sec. Calculate the average induced e.m.f.

Given Data: A = 500 cm² = 0.05 m², N = 1000, B = 0.4 G = 4 × 10⁻⁵ T, Δt = 0.1 s.

Formula Usede = N(2BA)/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

Rotation through 180° reverses the flux, so change in flux per turn is 2BA.

e = 1000 × 2 × 4×10⁻⁵ × 0.05 / 0.1.

e = 0.04 V.

Final Answer: 0.04 V.
Q9Coil inserted in magnetic field

Question: The area of a coil of 25 turns is 1.6 cm². This coil is inserted in 0.3 sec in a magnetic field of 1.8 Wb/m² such that its plane is perpendicular to the flux lines of the field. Calculate the e.m.f. induced in the coil. Also, calculate the total charge that passes through the wire, if its resistance is 10 Ω.

Given Data: N = 25, A = 1.6 cm² = 1.6×10⁻⁴ m², B = 1.8 T, Δt = 0.3 s, R = 10 Ω.

Formula Usede = NBA/Δt, q = NΔΦ/R
Step-by-Step Solution:

Initial flux is zero and final flux per turn is BA.

e = 25 × 1.8 × 1.6×10⁻⁴ / 0.3 = 2.4×10⁻² V.

Total charge q = NΔΦ/R = 25×1.8×1.6×10⁻⁴ / 10 = 7.2×10⁻⁴ C.

Final Answer: 2.4 × 10⁻² V; 7.2 × 10⁻⁴ C.
Q10Coil removed from strong magnetic field

Given Data: B = 10 T, N = 50, A = 100 cm² = 0.01 m², Δt = 0.1 s.

Formula Usede = NBA/Δt
Step-by-Step Solution:

Removing the coil reduces flux from BA to zero.

e = 50 × 10 × 0.01 / 0.1 = 50 V.

Final Answer: 50 V.
Q11Induced current in square copper frame

Question: A uniform magnetic field B exists in a direction perpendicular to the plane of a square frame made of copper wire. The wire has a diameter of 2 mm and a total length of 40 cm. The magnetic field changes with time at a steady rate dB/dt = 0.02 T/s. Find the current induced in the frame. Resistivity of copper = 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ ohm-m.

Given Data: Total length = 0.40 m, square side = 0.10 m, loop area = 0.01 m², wire diameter = 2 mm, ρ = 1.7×10⁻⁸ Ωm, dB/dt = 0.02 T/s.

Formula Usede = A(dB/dt), R = ρL/a, I = e/R
Step-by-Step Solution:

Area of square loop = (0.10)² = 0.01 m².

Induced EMF = A(dB/dt) = 0.01×0.02 = 2×10⁻⁴ V.

Wire cross-section a = π(1×10⁻³)² = π×10⁻⁶ m².

Resistance R = ρL/a = 1.7×10⁻⁸×0.40/(π×10⁻⁶) = 2.16×10⁻³ Ω.

I = e/R = 2×10⁻⁴/(2.16×10⁻³) = 9.3×10⁻² A.

Final Answer: 9.3 × 10⁻² A.
