Escape Velocity

Escape velocity is the minimum speed required for a body to escape Earth's gravitational field and reach infinity with zero speed. It is independent of the mass of the escaping body because mass cancels in the energy equation.

Energy Meaning

At surface, gravitational potential energy is -GMm/R. Escape requires kinetic energy equal to GMm/R so that total energy becomes zero at infinity.

Mass Independence

Both kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy contain m, so projectile mass cancels while deriving ve.

Orbital Velocity

Orbital velocity is the speed required for a satellite to move in a circular orbit. Gravity provides the centripetal force.

Satellite Motion

A natural satellite is a naturally orbiting body such as the Moon. An artificial satellite is launched by humans. In circular orbit, velocity is tangential and acceleration is toward Earth's centre.

A satellite has gravity acting on it. Weightlessness occurs because the satellite and astronaut are in continuous free fall, so normal reaction becomes zero.

Circular Orbit

Gravity bends the path continuously. Without tangential velocity, the body would fall; with correct speed, it keeps missing Earth.

Time Period of Satellite

The time period is the time taken to complete one revolution.

T = 2pi r/v

For height h: r = R + h, T = 2pi sqrt((R+h)3/GM)

Geostationary Satellite
