Introduction to Measurements
What is Measurement?
Measurement is the process of comparing an unknown physical quantity with a fixed standard unit. It gives Physics a numerical and testable form.
Why Important?
Physics depends on accurate measurements. Length, time, mass, temperature, current and force must be measured before laws can be tested.
Daily Examples
Buying vegetables by mass, measuring time in sports, checking temperature, reading speedometer and measuring medicine dose.
Physical Quantities Overview
Fundamental Quantities
These are independent quantities such as length, mass, time, electric current, temperature, amount of substance and luminous intensity.
Derived Quantities
These are obtained from fundamental quantities. Examples include speed, acceleration, force, pressure, work, power and density.
SI System Overview
SI Units
The International System of Units provides standard units accepted globally.
Base and Derived Units
Base units define fundamental quantities. Derived units are combinations of base units.
SI Prefixes
Prefixes such as kilo, milli, micro and nano help express very large or small quantities conveniently.
Accuracy, Errors and Dimensions Overview
Accuracy and Precision
Accuracy means closeness to the true value. Precision means closeness of repeated measurements to one another.
Errors
Errors may be systematic, random, instrumental or personal. Error analysis helps judge reliability of experiments.
Dimensions
Dimensions express a physical quantity in terms of fundamental quantities. Dimensional analysis checks formulae and derives relations.

Why Units and Measurements Matter
Many students underestimate this chapter because it looks easy. However, Units and Measurements forms the foundation of Physics. Questions from dimensions, errors, significant figures and measurements are frequently asked in CBSE, NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, IB, IGCSE and A-Level examinations.
