Introduction to Ray Optics
Ray Optics is the branch of Physics that explains the behaviour of light using the ray model. It deals with reflection, refraction, mirrors, lenses, optical instruments and defects of vision.
This chapter is extremely important for CBSE Class 12, NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, IB Physics, IGCSE Physics and A-Level Physics.
Students learn how images are formed by mirrors and lenses, how light bends while travelling from one medium to another and how optical instruments help us observe objects more clearly.
Nature of Light
- Light exhibits both wave nature and particle nature.
- Reflection and refraction are explained using wave theory.
- Photoelectric effect supports particle nature.
- Light can travel through vacuum.
- Speed of light in vacuum is 3 × 10⁸ m/s.
- Ray Optics assumes light travels in straight lines.
Ray Approximation
The ray approximation is valid when the wavelength of light is much smaller than the size of the obstacle or aperture.
In Ray Optics:
- Light is represented by rays.
- Rays travel in straight lines.
- Reflection and refraction can be studied geometrically.
- Wave effects such as diffraction are ignored.
