Physics Tutor in Palm Beach Road Mumbai – Concept Clarity, IIT JEE, NEET Physics and Torricelli’s Theorem
+91-9958461445
If you live near Palm Beach Road Mumbai and your Physics concepts are not becoming clear, then the real problem is usually not intelligence. The real problem is weak fundamentals, lack of proper doubt solving, and not understanding Physics through diagrams, logic and applications.
Palm Beach Road is one of the most premium and well-connected areas of Navi Mumbai. Students living around Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Sanpada and nearby societies often attend good schools and coaching classes, but still many of them struggle in Physics. They may understand theory in class, but when numerical questions come, especially in IIT JEE, NEET, CBSE, ICSE, IB, IGCSE, A-Level or AP Physics, they get stuck.
This is where Kumar Physics Classes helps students. Kumar Sir teaches Physics from the base level to advanced level. He explains every topic with diagrams, examples, numerical practice and real-life applications.
Why Physics Becomes Difficult for Students
Physics is not a subject of memorising formulas. Physics is a subject of understanding situations.
A student may remember:
v² = u² + 2as
But if the student does not know where to apply it, then the formula is useless.
A student may remember:
P = ρgh
But if the student does not understand pressure variation in fluids, then fluid mechanics becomes difficult.
A student may remember:
v = √2gh
But if the student does not understand Torricelli’s theorem, then the question will not happen.
That is why Kumar Sir focuses on concept clarity first.
Torricelli’s Theorem – Simple Definition
Torricelli’s theorem states that the speed of efflux of a liquid from a small hole at depth h below the free surface is equal to the speed acquired by a freely falling body through the same height h.
In simple words:
If water is coming out from a small hole in a tank, and the hole is at depth h below the water surface, then the speed of water coming out is:
v = √2gh
Here:
v = speed of liquid coming out
g = acceleration due to gravity
h = depth of hole below liquid surface
This means liquid behaves as if it has fallen freely through height h.
Kumar Sir Style Explanation
Suppose there is a water tank. Water is filled up to some height. A small hole is made on the side wall of the tank. Now water starts coming out.
Why does water come out?
Because pressure at depth h is more than atmospheric pressure. This pressure energy converts into kinetic energy. So the liquid gains speed.
Using Bernoulli’s theorem:
Pressure energy + potential energy + kinetic energy remains conserved.
At the top surface, speed is almost zero. At the hole, liquid comes out with speed v.
So we get:
v = √2gh
This is Torricelli’s theorem.
Why Torricelli’s Theorem Is Important for IIT JEE and NEET
Torricelli’s theorem is very important in fluid mechanics. Questions can come from:
Speed of efflux
Time taken to empty a tank
Range of liquid jet
Maximum horizontal range
Bernoulli’s theorem application
Pressure difference
Continuity equation
Fluid flow from holes at different depths
For IIT JEE, the question may not be direct. They may combine Torricelli’s theorem with projectile motion. For NEET, direct formula-based and conceptual questions are common.
That is why students need proper explanation, not just formula memorisation.

Torricelli’s Theorem – 40 Conceptual Questions With Answers
NEET + IIT JEE Physics | Fluid Mechanics
- Q: What does Torricelli’s theorem state?
Ans: It states that speed of liquid coming out from a small hole at depth h is equal to speed gained by a body falling freely through height h: v = √2gh. - Q: Which principle is used to derive Torricelli’s theorem?
Ans: Bernoulli’s theorem. - Q: Does the velocity of efflux depend on density of liquid?
Ans: No. In ideal conditions, v = √2gh, so density does not appear. - Q: If depth is doubled, what happens to velocity of efflux?
Ans: Velocity becomes √2 times. - Q: If depth becomes four times, velocity becomes?
Ans: Velocity becomes 2 times. - Q: Why does liquid come out from the hole?
Ans: Because pressure at depth h is greater than atmospheric pressure. - Q: What energy conversion happens in Torricelli’s theorem?
Ans: Pressure/potential energy converts into kinetic energy. - Q: Is Torricelli’s theorem valid for viscous liquids exactly?
Ans: No. It is exact only for ideal, non-viscous liquid. - Q: Why is speed at the free surface taken nearly zero?
Ans: Because tank area is much larger than hole area. - Q: What is the formula for velocity of efflux?
Ans: v = √(2gh). - Q: What is h in Torricelli’s theorem?
Ans: Vertical depth of the hole below the free surface. - Q: If hole is deeper, will speed increase?
Ans: Yes, because speed depends on √h. - Q: If two holes are at same depth in same tank, compare speeds.
Ans: Speeds are same. - Q: If two holes are at different depths, which has more speed?
Ans: The deeper hole. - Q: Does shape of container affect efflux speed?
Ans: Ideally no, only depth h matters. - Q: Does gravitational acceleration affect efflux speed?
Ans: Yes, v ∝ √g. - Q: On the Moon, will efflux speed be less?
Ans: Yes, because g is smaller. - Q: If tank is open to atmosphere, pressure at free surface is?
Ans: Atmospheric pressure. - Q: Pressure at the hole just outside is?
Ans: Atmospheric pressure. - Q: Why do atmospheric pressures cancel in derivation?
Ans: Because both free surface and outlet are exposed to atmosphere. - Q: Can Torricelli’s theorem be compared with free fall?
Ans: Yes. Liquid speed equals free fall speed from height h. - Q: If h = 5 m and g = 10 m/s², find v.
Ans: v = √(2×10×5) = √100 = 10 m/s. - Q: If v = 20 m/s and g = 10 m/s², find h.
Ans: v² = 2gh ⇒ 400 = 20h ⇒ h = 20 m. - Q: What is range of liquid jet if hole is at height y above ground and depth h below surface?
Ans: R = 2√(hy). - Q: When is range maximum for a tank of total liquid height H?
Ans: When hole is at mid-height: h = y = H/2. - Q: Maximum range from a tank of height H is?
Ans: Rmax = H. - Q: Two holes at depths h and H−h give same range. Why?
Ans: Because range depends on product hy. - Q: Is efflux speed horizontal initially?
Ans: Yes, if hole is on vertical wall. - Q: After coming out, what path does liquid follow?
Ans: Projectile path. - Q: Why is continuity equation sometimes used with Torricelli’s theorem?
Ans: To relate speed of liquid surface and speed at hole when tank area is not very large. - Q: If hole area is not very small, is surface speed negligible?
Ans: No, then surface speed must be considered. - Q: What happens to efflux speed as water level falls?
Ans: Speed decreases because h decreases. - Q: Why does water jet become weaker with time?
Ans: Because pressure head h decreases. - Q: Is Torricelli’s theorem applicable to gases?
Ans: Not directly in same simple form, because gases are compressible. - Q: What assumption is made about liquid?
Ans: Liquid is incompressible and non-viscous. - Q: What assumption is made about flow?
Ans: Flow is steady and streamlined. - Q: Why is actual velocity less than theoretical velocity?
Ans: Due to viscosity, turbulence and contraction of jet. - Q: What is coefficient of velocity?
Ans: Ratio of actual velocity to theoretical velocity. - Q: In NEET, what is the most common direct question from Torricelli’s theorem?
Ans: Finding speed of efflux using v = √2gh. - Q: What is the main concept to remember?
